Day 99 – Birthdays, Bears, Shoes, Stitches, & Zoos Oh My! (2026)

Hiking Adventures: A Day of Surprises and Celebrations

Today's story is a testament to the unexpected twists and turns that make hiking such an exhilarating adventure. From wildlife encounters to birthday celebrations, join me as I recount a day filled with surprises on the trail.

Trailside Encounters

Hiking is a journey of discovery, and today's journey began with a focus on my physical well-being. My left ankle, still tender from previous hikes, was feeling slightly better, allowing me to set out early in the morning. The trail initially offered a smooth experience, with only small rocky areas to navigate. As I hiked, I couldn't help but notice the impact of my sore foot on my pace and caution.

But the real surprise came when I was hiking behind my companion, Birdie. A sudden yell snapped me back to reality, and I witnessed a black bear sprinting across the trail. This unexpected encounter is a stark reminder of the wildness that surrounds us in nature. It's fascinating how these moments can jolt us out of our mental wanderings and bring us back to the present, sharing space with these majestic creatures.

The Journey Continues

After a brief stop at a state park restroom, where I ensured I was well-hydrated, I continued on my way. The hike up Bear Mountain, with its steep stairs, was a challenging yet rewarding experience. The views from the top were a sight to behold, even with the light rain. It's these moments of natural beauty that make the physical exertion worthwhile.

Descending the mountain, we were greeted by the Hudson River and a trailside zoo, where I caught glimpses of the local wildlife. This section of the trail, with its wide paths and steps, offered a different kind of challenge, especially for those with knee issues. It's a reminder that hiking is as much about managing your body's needs as it is about the destination.

Celebrations and Milestones

The day's adventures didn't end there. In a race against time, I managed to retrieve my new hiking shoes from the post office just before it closed for lunch. This was a significant moment, as my old shoes had served me well but were no longer up to the task. It's fascinating how these material possessions become companions on our journeys, and their retirement marks a milestone in our adventures.

The celebrations continued as we headed to a nearby Chili's to commemorate Birdie's birthday. It's these moments of camaraderie and joy that make hiking a truly special experience. The day concluded with a restful evening, a birthday celebration, and even a minor medical procedure as Birdie skillfully removed the stitches from my leg. What a day!

In my opinion, hiking is as much about the journey within as it is about the physical trail. These unexpected encounters and celebrations are what make each hike unique and memorable. It's a constant reminder to embrace the surprises that nature and life have in store for us.
